The municipality of Strömsund is the northernmost municipality in Jämtland County and to the surface Sweden’s sixth largest. There are about 12,000 inhabitants and 1,100 companies in the municipality. A strong local commitment characterizes the business community. The central community Strömsund is 140 km from the western town of Gäddede on the Norwegian border. Strömsund has a significant summer tourism around Vildmarksvägen (The Wilderness Road), which leads throughout the municipality and onwards via the mountain road over Stekenjokk to Västerbotten. Getting to Strömsund
Road E45 crosses the municipality. Airline passengers use Åre Östersund airport as well as South Lapland airport in Vilhelmina. The railway station is located in Ulriksfors, a few kilometers from Strömsund. It is mostly operated in summer by the Inlandsbanan train.

The municipality borders on the municipality Krokom and Norway in the west, Västerbotten county in the north and Ragunda, Östersund and Krokom municipalities in the south.
