At the heart of Sweden’s wild interior is Jämtland, a region rich in textile heritage shaped by indigenous Sami influence and craftsmanship dating back to the Viking era. From traditional felt-making to intricate woven tapestries the region’s legacy of craft is entwined with its landscape and long winters.
Your holiday begins with a welcoming introduction to Nuno felting and weaving where, guided by local artist Åsa Ganell you will create your own artwork – a tactile memory of your visit.
From here you will travel to the charming town of Östersund where you will visit the Jamtli regional museum, home to Viking-era textiles and local folk art. You will also explore Kyrkås Kulturgård, a farmsted and heritage site where rare Viking textiles were discovered. Here you will get a taste of Swedish tradition during a Tunnbröd (flatbread) baking workshop.
On day four you will enjoy a botanical print and dye workshop with Alva Marlen where you will forage for wildflowers and leaves to imprint onto fabric using natural dyes. The workshop is located in Moose Garden, a rescue farm for elk, so you will also have the chance to get up close to the King of the Forest!
Other highlights on this tour are visiting the mountain village of Undersåker and taking in the beauty of Tännforsen, Sweden’s largest waterfall.
